Dota 2: New Ranked Matchmaking System is Live

Valve finally introduced the reworked ranked matchmaking system for Dota 2, which they announced earlier this month with the release of Dueling Fates update. So how does it work?

The new system is very similar to various games with seasonal rankings, such as League of Legends or Heroes of the Storm. Instead of using aт MMR number, you’ll be placed in one of the seven divisions, also called Medal Levels:

  • Herald
  • Guardian
  • Crusader
  • Archon
  • Legend
  • Ancient
  • Divine

By playing in both Solo and Party ranked games you will earn stars of progress – to promote to the next division you’ll need to get five of them. Please note that solo games have a bigger impact on your rating, while party games won’t affect your rank when you play in Ancient and Divine divisions.

The new season starts today and will last for 6 months. Your previous MMR will be shown in your profile. To earn a new rank, you need to calibrate by playing in 10 ranking games, seeding in which is roughly based on your previous skill. As an achievement, the highest medal you reach throughout the season will be displayed in your profile. The players with 5 stars on the Divine Rank Medal will have a leaderboard number listed that shows their position among other players.

Summarizing the above, Valve added seven divisions with five stars of progress in each of them, introduced ranked seasons that last for 6 months and merged solo and party rank in the first five divisions.
